Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend  Next Entry
Bees and weekends and such.
===It has not been quite the relaxing weekend I had hoped for.

===Bees being bashed by bear, having to run about and get things for the electric fence (rather than gardening as I had hope to do)...

===Had a good time visiting a friend last evening (small little birthday thing...nice crew.)

===Today, waiting for the conservation officer to come over to look at the bear damage, my parents are coming over with the interim fence controller, as the controller we got is a good one, but it needs three days in the sun to be properly charged up for the first time.  (Yes, we went with solar....it makes the most sense out here.)  I did not move the bees last night...they were not amenable to moving last night, and I would rather get them moved into the electrified enclosure after we have it set up and actually protected.  (We have decided to fence off a bit of field outside the main garden, put the bees in there, and protect the entire garden and beeyard.  I will be growing vining things like hops between the beeyard and the garden, so there is not the immediate "HELLO BEES" effect when in that side of the garden.

===I like how things are developing...I only wish I had not had to deal with a bear effectively making me lose one hive, and have to really baby my other two.  But the design is looking to be a good shift.

===I still have a bunch of planting to do this weekend and next weekend, and I want to lay out where the meditation/rest area is going to be inside the garden. (curling paths, keyhole beds, and a place to sip tea=win.)

Wow, you know, I had to read that sentence about the bees and the bear about three times before I thought 'no, he means a *real bear*' and then suddenly realised Australia feels very far away from everywhere else!!!

Unfortunately, by leaving the bees in their present position until the sun rose, we allowed them the time to orient themselves to their present location with respect to the sun. D'oh. Bees and Sun. Yepyepyep.

So... now we can't move them. If we do, the workers will always return to the place where they think the hive should be and will die.

This weekend has been productive yet not.

We didn't plant corn and we didn't move the bees and we didn't set up the e-fence.

However, we did:

Sheet mulch another bed in the garden
Plant potatoes in the bed
Plant two sea berries
Plant a Medlar
Plant comfrey
Remove three more large buckets of rocks from the garden and place them in potholes on the road
Drive in four fence posts and fence in the medlar
Fence in the Sea berries
Add four more posts to the bee yard fence area in preparation installing the e-fence
Purchase all the equipment necessary for the e-fence.
Meet with animal control and get the reimbursement process started

Still to do:

Borrow your father and the tiller
Till corn area
Finish driving posts into the ground for the e-fence
Intstall e-fence
Plant corn
Plant other seeds that we have
Put more tomatoes in pots
Get marigold seeds from your dad
Get more sawdust and strawbales
Get signatures on the forms for the reimbursement
